Financial information can look intimidating if you are not an accountant. Yet, as a board or committee member, you carry the legal and ethical responsibility for your organisation’s financial health. This module, Understanding Financial Reports for Non-Accountants, is designed to build your confidence so you can read and interpret reports, ask good questions and fulfil your duties.  

Learning Intentions

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Explain why financial governance is important for boards.
  • Read and interpret basic financial reports (profit and loss, balance sheet, cash flow).
  • Understand key ratios such as working capital and what they reveal about solvency.
  • Identify the board’s responsibilities for budgeting, auditing and financial accountability.
  • Ask the right questions of management to ensure you are meeting your duties.
